The bike leg
Out of the fjord the road climbs almost without a break: from sea level in Eidfjord to about 1,250 m at Dyranut in the first 38 km, much of it at 4–7%. The course then rolls across the Hardangervidda plateau above 1,100 m for nearly 30 km, exposed to wind and cold, before a long descent to Geilo at around 770 m, 90 km in.
The second half is not flat either. Three more climbs of 200–300 m each follow between Geilo and the Tessungdalen valley, then Imingfjell, the last and steepest: about 570 m of climbing in 16 km from km 135 to the 1,169 m summit at km 151. From there it is 30 km of descending to T2 in Austbygde at about 200 m. The official course file adds it up to 3,280 m of ascent over 180 km; the race itself quotes "more than 3,000 m".
What Norseman asks of a bike
Gears first. With 3,300 m of climbing, most of the field spends six to seven hours on the bike and the opening climb comes straight out of a cold swim. A stock time-trial setup such as 54×40 with an 11–30 cassette leaves you grinding Dyranut at 60 rpm; a 36×34, 35×36 or a 1x 50×46 lets you spin it. Our ranking rewards the lowest gear a bike actually ships with, because that is what most riders race on.
Weight counts more than at Kona or Roth, but aero still matters: roughly 100 km of the course is plateau, rolling valley and descent, often into a headwind, where a slippery frame and a tucked position pay. That is why heavier tri bikes with a wide gear range can still outscore light road bikes here, and why we rank the two kinds separately rather than against each other.
The descents decide the rest. The drop from the plateau to Geilo and the 30 km run-in from Imingfjell are long, fast and frequently wet, on tarmac that race reports describe as bumpy and potholed. Disc brakes are a given (we leave rim-brake bikes out), and clearance for 28–30 mm tires lets you run lower pressures for grip and comfort. A front end you can hold confidently in the drops or on the base bar for 30 km matters as much as pad position.
Then the cold. Riders report shifting with their wrists because their fingers no longer work; electronic shifting with large buttons, and shifter blips on the extensions, are worth more here than their price difference suggests. Lights and a reflective vest are compulsory on the plateau, so check the bike takes a rear light (aero seatposts often need an adapter) and that a top-tube box or down-tube compartment has room for gloves, a gilet and a tube or two between hand-ups from your crew.
Hydration integration, the headline feature of modern superbikes, is the least decisive factor here: there are no aid stations, but your crew follows in a car and hands up bottles and food, so what you carry only has to bridge the gaps. Make sure you can drink and eat from the aerobars with numb hands, whatever system the bike uses.
Tri bike or road bike with clip-ons?
Both work, and both have won. A triathlon bike is faster across the plateau and down the valley, keeps your run legs fresher in the aero position and, on the current superbikes, carries food and spares inside the frame; its costs are a kilo or two of weight, higher stock gearing on many builds and a less relaxed position for the long descents. Jon Sæverås Breivold set the course record on a Quintana Roo tri bike in 2023.
A light aero road bike with clip-on aerobars climbs Dyranut and Imingfjell more easily, ships with 34- or 36-tooth sprockets, descends on the drops with hydraulic levers under your fingers and takes a layer of clothing without fuss. It gives up aero on the 100 km where the course is fast, and clip-ons never put you in as low or as adjustable a position as a proper cockpit.
Our rule of thumb: race the tri bike if you can fit a gear close to 1:1 on it and have ridden it comfortably for seven hours in the cold; otherwise take the road bike with clip-ons, and spend the saved money on wheels you can brake on in the rain and tires you trust at 28 mm.

How we ranked
Course fit is a score out of 100: the weighted mean of the factors below, each scored from the manufacturer's published data on the bike page. A factor the maker doesn't state is left out and the others are reweighted, so a bike without a published weight is neither rewarded nor punished for it. Discontinued bikes, rim-brake bikes (the descents off Hardangervidda and Imingfjell are long and often wet) and bikes whose maker publishes no stock gearing (framesets and frame kits) are left out. The list updates automatically as bikes and builds are added; every value links back to its manufacturer source. Last updated .
- Climbing gears tri & TT 35%, road 30%
- The lowest gear a stock build ships with (smallest chainring over biggest sprocket). A 1:1 ratio or lower scores 90 or more; a time-trial setup around 40×30 scores under 50.
- Weight tri & TT 25%, road 25%
- The lightest complete build the maker publishes. Triathlon and TT bikes are judged against each other (8 kg scores 100, 10.5 kg about 40), road bikes against each other (6.4 kg scores 100, 9 kg about 20).
- Aero tri & TT 20%, road 20%
- The aero score from the bike's verdict: the plateau and the valley to T2 are long, exposed and often into a headwind, so aerodynamics still decide a lot of the split.
- Tire clearance tri & TT 10%, road 15%
- Official maximum tire width. Long, wet descents on rough tarmac reward 28–30 mm tires at lower pressures: 32 mm or more scores 100, 30 mm 85, 28 mm 65, 25 mm 40.
- Hydration & storage tri & TT 10%
- Your crew hands up bottles and food, so integrated hydration matters less than at Kona; storage for a gilet, gloves and spares between hand-ups still helps. Both built in scores 100, one 70, neither 45.
- Clip-on aerobars road 10%
- Whether the maker allows or offers clip-on aerobars on the stock cockpit, for the 100 km of plateau and valley where you want to tuck in. Yes scores 100, not stated 60, no 20.
Weights per list: triathlon and TT bikes: climbing gears 35%, weight 25%, aero 20%, tire clearance 10%, hydration & storage 10%; aero road bikes: climbing gears 30%, weight 25%, aero 20%, tire clearance 15%, clip-on aerobars 10%.

FAQ
How much climbing is on the Norseman Xtreme Triathlon bike course?
180 km from Eidfjord to Austbygde, 3,280 m of ascent. The highest point is about 1,250 m on the Hardangervidda plateau, 38 km in.
Which triathlon bike has the lowest gearing for Norseman Xtreme Triathlon?
Of the current triathlon and TT bikes we rank, the Dolan TR2 ships with the lowest gear: 33×36 on the TR2 SRAM Force AXS 1x12/2x12. Its course fit is 86/100.
Which aero road bike has the lowest gearing for Norseman Xtreme Triathlon?
Of the current aero road bikes we rank, the Cinelli Pressure II ships with the lowest gear: 33×36 on the Pressure 2 SRAM Rival AXS 2x12 (US). Its course fit is 88/100.
Should I ride a triathlon bike or a road bike at Norseman Xtreme Triathlon?
Our rule of thumb: race the tri bike if you can fit a gear close to 1:1 on it and have ridden it comfortably for seven hours in the cold; otherwise take the road bike with clip-ons, and spend the saved money on wheels you can brake on in the rain and tires you trust at 28 mm.
Are there aid stations on the Norseman Xtreme Triathlon bike course?
There are none: a personal support crew in a car hands up food, drink and clothing.
How is the course fit score calculated?
It is the weighted mean of climbing gears, weight, aero, tire clearance, hydration & storage, clip-on aerobars, each scored from the manufacturer's published data. Discontinued bikes, rim-brake bikes (the descents off Hardangervidda and Imingfjell are long and often wet) and bikes whose maker publishes no stock gearing (framesets and frame kits) are left out.
