FactorHANZŌ

Time trial20211st generation ↗Disc brakesUCI legal

The HANZŌ is Factor's UCI-legal time-trial bike. It was the first production TT bike designed under the UCI tube-shape rules that took effect in January 2021. It has a very narrow head tube with 1-inch bearings, a one-piece wide-stance fork with an external steerer and a monoriser aerobar system. Factor sells it as a frame package or as complete SRAM builds.

Our verdict

Overall

out of 100, average of 6 categories

A light, premium UCI time-trial bike with a lifetime warranty, Red or Force power-meter builds and published pad stack and reach ranges that make fitting it straightforward. The one-piece fork and monoriser, 1-inch bearings and electronic-only frame make it fussy to service, and storage stops at a down-tube bottle.

Good to know

  • Design

The fork, external steerer and monoriser are moulded as one piece. Factor says this replaces dozens of bolted parts and is stiffer and lighter than designs with overlapping bonded or slip joints. The head tube uses 1-inch bearings top and bottom.

    Source
  • Aerodynamics

Factor kept the fork and frame airfoils well clear of the tires to limit interference from spinning wheels. That gives room for 28 mm tires, and the seat stays are as wide as the UCI allows.

    Source
  • Fit

Factor says the monoriser gives 'penalty-free pad stack'. It has shared the mast CAD with AeroCoach and WattShop so riders can use their extensions as well as Black Inc's.

    Source
  • Integration

The down tube is shaped to integrate an aero water bottle and hides the Di2 junction box where it is easy to reach. The seatpost has room for a Di2 battery.

    Source
  • Compatibility

The frame is electronic-only with internal routing. It takes up to 160 mm rotors front and rear and chainrings up to 56T. The bottom bracket is PF4630 with 24 mm BBRight reducers.

    Source
  • Racing

Prototypes were raced in the final time trial of the 2021 Giro d'Italia, selected riders used it at the 2021 Tour de France, and Ben Hermans won a time trial on it at the Tour Poitou-Charentes.

    Source
  • History

The HANZŌ was the first production WorldTour TT bike developed under the UCI tube-shape rules confirmed on 1 January 2021. Factor worked on it with Israel Start-Up Nation, including Chris Froome and Alex Dowsett.
