TrekSpeed Concept SLR

Trek's third-generation Speed Concept, introduced for the 2022 model year. It is a UCI-legal disc-brake triathlon bike with an 800 Series OCLV carbon frame using KVF tube shapes, IsoSpeed for compliance, an integrated bento box, downtube flat-kit storage and an aero downtube bottle. A separate Speed Concept SLR TT frame drops the triathlon storage and IsoSpeed for time trials.

Our verdict

Overall

out of 100, average of 7 categories

A UCI-legal triathlon bike that still builds in a bento box, flat-kit storage and an aero bottle, with one of the best-documented fit systems in the catalog. You give up tyre clearance (25 mm up front) and accept a proprietary cockpit and seat mast, with IsoSpeed servicing left to Trek dealers.

Known issues & recalls

  • Recall2022-08

Carbon base bar can crack (2022 recall)

Trek voluntarily recalled the carbon base bar fitted to model-year 2022 Speed Concept SLR bikes because it can crack or break if overloaded, which could cause a fall. Health Canada listed five US incidents involving Speed Concept bikes; the recall also covered Emonda SLR bikes and the Bontrager Aeolus RSL VR-C bar/stem.

Affected: All model-year 2022 Speed Concept SLR bikes (SLR 6 eTap, SLR 7, SLR 7 eTap, SLR 9, SLR 9 eTap), including Project One; sold June 2020 to June 2022

What to do: Stop riding and take the bike to a Trek retailer for a free replacement base bar, new bar tape and installation.

Good to know

  • Integration

Included: downtube flat kit, top-tube bento box, aero downtube bottle and rear light mount. Not included: a between-the-arms bottle, flat-kit contents, computer mount and front light mount.

    Source
  • Compatibility

Trek's service manual gives maximum tyre widths of 25 mm front and 28 mm rear for the SLR frame, so the narrower front clearance is the limit. The TT frame is 25 mm at both ends.

    Source
  • Compatibility

Maximum chainrings: 58T for 1x; for 2x, 55T large with Shimano or 54T with SRAM, and a 44T maximum small ring on the SLR. Rotors are 140-160 mm on flat mounts.

    Source
  • Compatibility

Cranks with 30 mm spindles work if a matching T47 bottom bracket exists. Trek optimised the frame only for electronic shifting.

    Source
  • Racing

Trek's FAQ says every complete Speed Concept SLR is built with UCI-legal parts. At launch the SLR basebar was not legal and needed swapping for the TT basebar, but a later UCI rule change made both basebars legal.

    Source
  • History

Trek calls this version Speed Concept 3.0. Compared with earlier versions it is all new, with improved aero, IsoSpeed, fully integrated storage and hydration, disc brakes, and an easier build, travel and fit process.

    Source
  • Versions

An SLR frameset from Trek comes without basebar, seatpost or extensions. An SLR frame ordered through Project One includes the SLR basebar, seatpost and extensions.

    Source
  • Versions

Trek's current range (November 2026) is the SLR 9 AXS with SRAM Red AXS E1, SLR 9 with Dura-Ace Di2, SLR 7 AXS, SLR 7 and an SLR frameset; the SLR 6 AXS, SLR 8 AXS and the earlier Red AXS SLR 9 AXS are no longer listed.
