Newer generation: Speedmax (6th generation) (2026). Specs and test results here are for this earlier bike. What changed

Our verdict

Overall

out of 100, average of 7 categories

A cheaper way into a carbon Speedmax with built-in hydration and storage, five sizes and a power meter and deep carbon wheels on every build. The flat basebar with clip-on extensions is less aero than the newer closed cockpit but easier to adjust and swap. If buying used, check whether the bike is covered by the 2025 fork steerer recall.

Known issues & recalls

  • Recall2025-02

Fork steerer can crack under the V21 aerostem

Canyon and the US CPSC recalled Speedmax CF bikes fitted with the V21 aerostem because the fork steerer tube at the stem clamp can crack or break, mostly after a hard impact such as a deep pothole, which can let the stem and handlebar come loose. About 1,400 bikes were covered in the US and about 380 in Canada; no incidents were reported. Bikes can be identified by 'V21' printed on the stem. The UK Office for Product Safety and Standards published the same recall in November 2024 (PSD 2411-0071), rated serious risk.

Affected: Speedmax CF models R073 and R41 with V21 aerostems, sold on canyon.com from May 2017 to July 2024 (CPSC recall 25-156)

What to do: Stop riding and book a free repair with a Canyon Authorized Service Partner: the steerer is inspected, the fork replaced if needed and the clamping area reinforced.

Good to know

  • Design

Only the XS size uses 650b (27.5 in) wheels, with a 72° head angle and 410 mm chainstays. S to XL use 700c wheels.

  • Fit

Unlike the CFR and CF SLX, the CF uses a conventional flat basebar (CP0041) with clip-on Profile Design extensions instead of an integrated cockpit.

    Source
  • Racing

Canyon gives no UCI status for this bike, but its product images carry frame code R073, which is not on the UCI's list of approved framesets (August 2026). The Speedmax frames on that list are the R24, R40 (CF SLX), R41 (CF) and R090 (CFR Disc).

    Source
  • History

In February 2025 Canyon and the US CPSC recalled about 1,400 Speedmax CF bikes (models R073 and R41 with V21 aerostems) sold from May 2017 to July 2024, because the fork steerer could crack. The fix was a free inspection and reinforcement or fork replacement. Owners of used bikes should check whether theirs is affected.

  • Versions

Canyon's July 2026 launch of the sixth-generation Speedmax covered only the CFR and CF SLX. The Speedmax CF 7 Di2 stays in the range as the entry model at €4,999.

    Source
  • Versions

In GB and EU the CF is sold as the 'CF 7 Di2 Race' and 'CF 8 Di2 Race' with DT Swiss ARC 1600 Spline 65/85 mm wheels. The US 'CF 7 Di2' has ARC 1600 60/80 mm wheels.
