Wilier TriestinaTurbine SLR

A lighter evolution of Wilier's Turbine. It keeps the original's aero front end and hinged fork but adds a much slimmer, road-bike-like rear triangle and seat area, and Wilier says the frame is 300 g lighter. Astana pushed for it, wanting a quicker bike for hilly and twisty time trials, and it was first raced as a prototype at the 2022 Giro d'Italia. It meets the UCI rules and keeps the Turbine's three sizes. A 380 mm monocoque basebar takes extensions that adjust in width and from 0 to 75 mm in height.

Our verdict

Overall

out of 100, average of 6 categories

A very light UCI time-trial frame for hilly, technical courses where agility matters more than outright top speed. Wilier's own Supersonica is measurably faster in the wind tunnel, and the Turbine SLR has no storage, only three sizes and a proprietary bar, fork and seatpost.

Good to know

  • Design

The seat tube, seatpost, seatstays and chainstays were all made noticeably slimmer, cutting about 300 g from the frame compared with the original Turbine.

    Source
  • Design

According to Escape Collective, Astana pushed Wilier for a lighter, almost climbing-oriented TT bike for courses with hills and frequent changes of direction.

    Source
  • Fit

Wilier kept the original Turbine geometry and its three sizes (XS/S, M, L/XL) because its pro riders were happy with it.

    Source
  • Fit

Each extension can be raised 0-75 mm with a 40/20/10/5 mm shim kit and mounted at different widths on the 380 mm basebar. A metal insert stops the bar from spinning far enough to hit the frame.

    Source
  • History

Wilier revealed the Turbine SLR as a prototype for Astana at the 2022 Giro d'Italia time trial in Budapest. It paired the Turbine's front end with a slimmed-down rear triangle.

    Source
  • Versions

Wilier measured the newer Supersonica SLR as almost 16% more aerodynamically efficient than the Turbine SLR at 50 km/h.
