Replaced by Cervélo P5

Cervélo's 2019 P5 was a full redesign of the P5 around disc brakes, built for UCI time trials and for triathlon. Cervélo says the frame and fork were 18% (350 g) lighter and much stiffer than the rim-brake P5, with slightly less drag. It added a fixed basebar with a mono-riser cockpit, a 500 ml aero bottle for the down tube and top-tube storage bags. Team Jumbo-Visma raced it until the 2024 P5 replaced it.

Our verdict

Overall

out of 100, average of 7 categories

A used-market pick for riders who want one proven frame for UCI time trials and triathlon: it even won a hilly Tour de France time trial. The trade-offs are a long, low fit with no stock extension tilt and hydration limited to a 500 ml down-tube bottle plus add-ons, so less flexible long-course riders should look at newer designs.

Good to know

  • Design

Cervélo says the frame and fork are 18% lighter (350 g) than the previous P5, and 22% stiffer at the head tube and 26% stiffer at the bottom bracket. To get there it shrank the bottom-bracket area and stopped extending the seat-tube fairing over the rear wheel.

    Source
  • Fit

BikeRadar reports that Cervélo kept the handling geometry of the previous P5. AeroGeeks calls the fit long and low and less accommodating than the P5X.

    Source
  • Compatibility

The frame has 36 mm of clearance, which Cervélo rates for 28 mm tyres. It works with RAT or threaded thru-axles (an aero axle is supplied) and has vertical rear dropouts and a removable plastic chainstay guard.

    Source
  • Racing

Jonas Vingegaard rode the P5 for the whole of the hilly 2023 Tour de France stage 16 time trial to Combloux and won it, without switching to a road bike for the final climb.

    Source
  • History

Cervélo presented the bike in March 2019. AeroGeeks says it took seven years to develop and was a ground-up redesign, not the old P5 with disc brakes added.
